The international technology and market conference on polymer materials in photovoltaic manufacturing
20-22 April 2010, Maritim Hotel, Cologne, Germany
Organised by Applied Market Information Ltd. (AMI)
Polymers in Photovoltaics 2010 took place from 20-22 April 2010 at the Maritim Hotel in Cologne, Germany. There was a welcome reception and registration on the first day followed by a 2-day technical programme of expert speakers.
There has been rapid growth in the markets for photovoltaic modules worldwide: the big issues are to get production costs down to less than 1$/Watt and to ensure long-term durability. Manufacturing technology has to become more cost-effective, and this includes innovations in polymer materials for module components. Polymers offer chemical resistance, flexibility, availability and easy processability. The flexibility is of particular interest in small portable cells and building integrated photovoltaics. Polymers are found in components such as front sheet materials, encapsulants, thin film substrates, photoactive layers, junction box and support casings, back sheet materials, high performance seals, adhesives and cable insulation. Test methods have been developed to ensure that polymer components reach the required standards.
The programme for Polymers in Photovoltaics 2010 looked at a wide range of topics on module manufacturing including testing and approvals. It provided a unique networking and sourcing opportunity for module manufacturers, solar power companies and suppliers to the industry.
